on a larger scale. Is Simple XML Logger the only logger and
other "loggers" are just things that reformat it?  Or do we
actually have separate logs?  If so, we will end up with
differing formats of logs, and this chat log viewing program
will have trouble existing.

I move that we do the first option.

hiss has to ship with a stripper program that filters logs
to a simpler format. most of the jabber xml should be
stripped, but the from-user needs to show, as does any html
in the conv.

a special feature would be to unescape linebreaks, perhaps
like "2003-05-26T55:55:55-5:55 (cont): more of the line".
